Employee Spotlight: Robby Flair

Jul_23_2015__MG_8959.jpgRobby started out here at Website Pipeline as a software developer on our ERP team, but because he has mad customer service skills, he has since been moved into a project management role.

Project managers focus on getting new websites up and running (live), and then make sure our customers are happy and everything is working like it's supposed to before turning them over to the account management team.

When a new project comes in, Robby takes over the show- working directly with the client to build in the features they need, and walking them through the logistics of their website.

His experience as a software developer on both the front end and back end (erp team) has helped him to understand how things work under the hood, and also enabled him to contribute some development work on his projects.

He is an essential link between the technology of our product and our customers.

What is your favorite hobby?

I’ve always loved sports and being outside. Growing up, I played baseball for a while and then got into ice hockey.

Nobody around here knows much about hockey or that people even play it down here.  When I was a wee lad living in Charlotte, I saw some of the cool neighborhood kids playing street hockey in the cul-de-sac.  I asked my parents for some hockey gear that year for Christmas, and have played ever since.  I was on a travel team for 12 years or so, going up and down the east coast playing game series and tournaments.  None of the high schools around here have ice hockey teams, but Greenville has put together a team from all the schools in the area, so I played on that.  We did pretty good and won state multiple times, and my last year they made the team split into two teams because we kept winning.  I still try to play sometimes (pick-up games and adult league at the Pavilion).  I love hockey because its super fast-paced, very physical, but also requires a lot of speed and finesse (I wasn’t the biggest kid growing up, but I laid a few heavy hits on some punks).

Golf is one of my favorite hobbies now.  I didn’t start playing until around sophomore year at Clemson, but I really enjoy it.  Believe it or not it has similar mechanics to hockey and baseball.  Maybe I just like swinging things.

I also have a bunch of other hobbies, like skateboarding and playing guitar. My problem is that I like to do too many things.

What is the funniest thing that has happened at Website Pipeline?

One time, a fellow employee and I had a really dumb bet to see who could putt a golf ball and get it to rest right on top of this small ledge (working really hard obviously).

I won of course, and he had to get his ear pierced at the mall and wear whatever earring I picked out.  I picked out a huge diamond stud, but I actually thought he looked great with it.  He ended up taking it out the next day, but a lot of great photoshops of his picture circulated around the office for a while.  It was all in good fun though.

What is one thing you couldn't go a day without?

I would probably say my faith. I am a Christian, and I try to work on my faith every day.

What's in your earbuds lately?

Either rap/hip hop, or something with good guitar like blues, and good singing like John Mayer. John Mayer is a great guitar player. I go through phases, so it's always something a little different.

What's in your collection?

Souls and Scotty Cameron putter head covers.  I know that sounds odd, but Scotty Cameron is a golf putter brand and they make really cool covers to go over and protect them. Robby1.png

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?

Goofy. Laid-back. Faithful.

Do you like to travel?

I actually just started thinking more about how I would like to travel. This is super weird, but if I could go anywhere, it would probably be North Korea. What attracts me to a place like that is how different it is, almost like an alternate universe where the traditions, culture, and way of life are so different it is almost alien. I don't  know that I would ever go, just because it's so risky; but, somewhere where the environment is extreme like that would be awesome to experience.

What's your favorite thing about working at Website Pipeline?

I really enjoy working at Website Pipeline because of the environment,  the people that work here, and the work that we do.

We have fun, but we also work really hard.  I really enjoy my job, the challenges I face, and the things that I learn.

What are your pet peeves?

When people say "mom" instead of "my mom", like if you're talking to someone you're not related to, and they'll say "Oh yeah, mom told me to do that thing today", or "I'm going to see dad". (Instead of saying "my mom told me today", or "I'm going to see my dad".

I don't know why that bothers me. I have a friend who does it all the time, and I just wanna be like, "Your mom is not my mom." Get it together.

Also, people being loud on the golf course, or just being all around disrespectful.

But I'm pretty laid back so a lot of things don't really bother me.DSCF3630.png

What programming languages are you fluent in?

Mostly C, C++, and Java. But also a little bit of Python, HTML/CSS, SQL, ASP classic, C-sharp, VB.net, and Javascript.

Robby is one of 60+ Website Pipeline employees, all of whom are in North America. He was once kicked out of a One Direction cover band that never came to be. You can learn more about the Website Pipeline culture on our website, or visit our Meet The Team page to see more WSP employees.
